If We All Can Share Her Compassion

What makes us not turn away when we face a terrible problem?

An informed heart? A bond with the place we call home? A deep well of compassion?

Ask Diane Latiker.

Ask her why she started helping Roseland kids out of her house and then couldn’t stop so that her home became a youth center called Kids Off The Block and her front yard a memorial to kids killed way before their time.

At our community meeting in Bronzeville earlier this year, she spoke about what she is doing on behalf of Chicago kids facing violence.

She repeated her story last night at CNN’s annual awards for heroes and it should feel very reassuring that there are Diane Latiker’s among us.

Here’s her story on CNN:

Don’t tell me we don’t have heroes in the hood.
